Legal Leaders: A Career as an In-House Lawyer

In collaboration with Thomson Reuters this programme consists of four virtual events, each focusing on a different theme relevant to the role and career of in-house lawyers.

  • Event date: 22 February 2023 02:00 PM
  • Event type: Webinar
  • Duration: 1 hour
  • Provided by: The Centre for Legal Leadership and Thomson Reuters

Each event runs for one hour from 2.00 pm and includes a presentation by two prominent in-house lawyers together with a Q&A session.

There is enormous variety in in-house law. In-house lawyers work for a huge range of organisations in many different sectors. They may work alone or in a small team, or in a very large one. It may be a centralised team or be co-located with clients, including in different legal jurisdictions. Some in-house teams deal with almost all their organisation’s legal work, while others utilise external advisers more. The degree of specialisation, systems and processes and work culture can vary significantly between different teams and organisations.

Given this variety, is it therefore possible to plan a rewarding in-house career and what are the key attributes that in-house lawyers need in 2023 and beyond?

In this session we will explore these and other related questions in the company of our two guest presenters, both senior lawyers with long in-house experience.

Leading the discussion will be out guest presenters:

Linda Dann, CBE, National Security Law Director, Microsoft UK

Before joining Microsoft in 2020, Linda held various posts in the Civil Service, including 15 years as a Senior Civil Servant in the UK Ministry of Defence. She led the legal team advising on all aspects of the use of force in the UK’s overseas military operations. Subsequently, she held a policy role responsible for our defence relationships with our European partners, and delivering Brexit for Defence.

Elizabeth Messud, Group General Counsel, Kingfisher plc

General Counsel with extensive leadership and commercial experience gained in a broad range of roles across different countries and sectors, Elizabeth had worked in FMCG and in asset management before her current assignment to Kingfisher plc, a major UK retailer.

Elizabeth’s main focus at Kingfisher is on corporate and regulatory matters, including M&A, corporate governance, competition law, commercial law matters, IP law and compliance.

Over her career, Elizabeth has repeatedly transformed legal teams to deliver business-focused high performance. She has an authentic and values-based leadership style and is passionate about collaboration and co-creation. Elizabeth believes these can only be successfully achieved in a team that is broad-based in its membership and where a plurality of experiences can be shared and is brought to bear on the values and behaviours that shape the team.
