Legal Leaders: The major challenges facing in-house lawyers today

Legal Leaders Programme 2024

  • Event date: 17 April 2024 02:00 PM
  • Event type: Webinar
  • Duration: 1 hour
  • Provided by: The Centre for Legal Leadership and Thomson Reuters

We are delighted to be continuing our special content partnership with Thomson Reuters into 2024.

The Programme consists of four virtual events, each focusing on a different theme relevant to the role and career of in-house lawyers.

Each event runs for one hour from 2.00 pm and includes a presentation by two prominent in-house lawyers together with a Q&A session.

In this session we will explore some of the key challenges facing in-house lawyers in 2024, whether in relation to the practicalities of ‘getting the job done’, recruitment, retention, resources, remote working, demonstrating value and the effective use of technology - in addition to the challenges posed by new and changing risks and the pace of business change generally.

We will also look at how in-house lawyers have adapted to changing priorities and demands in their organisations and how in-house lawyers will be able to respond to future challenges in a way that continues to support the provision of a first class and highly effective legal service to their organisation.

Our two regular presenters are both experienced, senior in-house lawyers well versed in dealing with many of these matters, who will speak about their personal experiences in handling some of these challenges.

Leading the discussion will be our guest presenters:

Michael Jennings, Director of Legal Services at the Health and Safety Executive

Michael was called to the Bar in 1994.  Until 2009 he was a prosecutor in CPS London handling cases ranging from theft to murder.  In 2009 Michael joined the Special Crime Division at CPS HQ advising on high profile prosecutions.  From 2011 to 2014 he was a senior legal adviser and speechwriter to the Attorney General.

From 2014 Michael worked in the Home Office Legal Advisers as a senior lawyer and then Deputy Director.   In 2019 he was appointed Principal Private Secretary to the Home Secretary.  In 2020 he joined the Ministry of Justice as Principal Legal Adviser to the Legal Aid Agency and Head of the Legal Adviser’s Private International Law Team.  Since 2023 he has been Director of Legal Services at the Health and Safety Executive.

Alex O'Connell, Head of Legal, Fever-Tree

Before joining Fever-Tree Drinks plc, the world’s leading supplier of premium carbonated mixers in 2021, Alex worked in the Legal and Corporate Affairs team at AB InBev, the world’s leading brewer, and prior to that at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP as a corporate lawyer in London and Singapore.

Before entering the law Alex was a professional fencer, representing Team GB at the Olympic Games in 2008.
