Developing an in-house career

Development session 2022

  • Event date: 04 May 2022 08:30 AM
  • Event type: Discussion
  • Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Provided by: The Centre for Legal Leadership

Now in its 4th year, the CLL Development Programme is an interactive programme built around all those matters that matter to in-house lawyers and covering skills, management, leadership, strategy, relationships and career. It’s open to all in-house lawyers, wherever you work and whatever your level of experience.

Each session emphasises a different aspect of the in-house lawyer’s role and career and we encourage participants to bring along any issues of particular interest to them.

In this session we will discuss what it takes to develop a sustainable in-house career, looking at career planning, building skills and profile the importance of mentors and networks, changing roles and organisations, and the range of legal and other roles available to lawyers in organisations.

The career path for in-house lawyers can be very different from those in private practice given that legal teams are typically not large (certainly when compared to some law firms), management structures are often fairly flat and career progression may have little to do with PQE. Add to these the fact that organisations and sectors vary enormously and are subject to change and disruption and also that our personal ambitions may change over time and you may be wondering how you can develop a sustainable career in-house?

Discussion points will include:

  • Career planning;
  • Mentors and coaches,
  • When to move roles; and
  • Life beyond the law.

The sessions last for 90 minutes and start at 8.30 am to fit in with our participants’ schedules. They take place under Chatham House rule and we don’t record the sessions or publicise attendance.

Attendance is free. You can attend all the sessions or any combination of them.
